MEET THIRD VERB’S WINTER INSTRUCTORS

We are looking forward to our four distinct workshops–for the workplace writer to the aspiring novelist–over the next few months. We hope you’ll find a session that appeals to your writing interests. Each of our sessions has something to offer to writers of all skill levels–from the emerging to the established. If you have never been to a Third Verb workshop before, jump in! Give yourself permission to develop your craft.

We would like to introduce you to our skilled instructors: Annette Wierstra, Omar Mouallem, Jason Lee Norman, and Diana Davidson.


WORKSHOP 1: PLAIN LANGUAGE – Feb. 13 

Annette-400x400Third Verb is proud to present Annette Wierstra as the instructor for our Enhancing Prose through Format: The Shape of Plain Language workshop.

Annette Wierstra is has been writing professionally for nearly 20 years starting in journalism and website content and moving into technical and business communication. She enjoys taking complex content and distilling it into plain language that suits the intended audience. In 2008, Annette started Scriptorium Professional Writing Services with a partner. She has also been teaching research, technical writing, and short prose at Grant MacEwan University since 2008. Annette has a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Applied Communications in Professional Writing, and a Masters of Arts in Intercultural and International Communication.

WORKSHOP 2: PITCH PERFECT – Feb. 28

Edmonton, Yeg, Writer, WorkshopThird Verb is proud to present Omar Mouallem as the instructor of Pitch Perfect: How to write a query letter.

Omar Mouallem has been nominated for 20 Alberta Magazine Awards and he won the 2014 National Magazine Award for profiles. Since starting his career as a music and film critic 10 years ago, he’s written for WIREDThe GuardianRollingStone.comNewYorker.com and many Canadian magazines.

A generalist, he’s covered a range of topics in long-form features: the evolution of cat shows; the distorted history of donairs; an immigrant barber turned hostage-taker; and two different wrestlers from the Hart Family dynasty. Omar, whose education was in screenwriting and film production, proudly brings a cinematic quality to his stories.

Omar has taught courses at MacEwan University and Edmonton Digital Arts  College, and numerous workshops on writing and journalism. He is based in Edmonton, where he edits uAlberta Business.


WORKSHOP 3: FLASH WRITING – March 8

Jason Lee Norman is a writer from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He received his MA in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester at the Centre for New Writing. He is the author of two short story collections, Americas and Beautiful Girls & Famous Men and is the editor and publisher behind the 40 Below winter anthologies and Monto BooksEnd of the Earth.


WORKSHOP 4: DEVELOPING CHARACTERS – March 16

dianadavidson_thirdverbThird Verb is proud to present Diana Davidson as the instructor for Developing Believable Characters in Creative Writing workshop.

Diana Davidson is a writer, reader, and lover of libraries. Her debut novel Pilgrimage (Brindle & Glass) was shortlisted for the AB Readers’ Choice Award in 2014 and spent many weeks on The Edmonton Journal bestsellers. Some of her creative nonfiction work has won the Writers Guild of Alberta Jon Whyte Memorial Essay award (“Ahead of the Ice”) and been long-listed for CBC Writes (“Luminescence”).  She has been published in both 40 Below anthologiesAvenue EdmontonAlberta Views, and The Winnipeg Review. Davidson has a Ph.D. in literature and taught at the University of Alberta for many years.

She is currently the Director of the Public Library Services Branch with the Government of Alberta and was recently honoured by the Canada Council for the Arts, through the Governor General’s Literary Awards, for her work in making books available to visually impaired library users.
